Global Marine Services and Rotary tree project supports environment
View(s):Global Marine Services (Private) Limited, a company engaged in Seafarer recruitment and placement on foreign vessels, entered into an agreement to partner with Rotary Sri Lanka’s One Million Trees Project to grow the country’s forest cover.
The agreement highlights Global Marine Services’ commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with their commitment to plant 10 trees for every seafarer employed, to minimise carbon footprints.
The signing saw the participation of representatives from both organisations. Captain Joseph Ranchigoda, Group Director and Captain Channa Abeyagunewardena, Managing Director, represented Global Marine Services.
Representing Rotary were One Million Trees Trust Chair Gowri Rajan, Dion Schoorman, and Pubudu De Zoysa.
“Our commitment to planting ten trees for every seafarer employed reflects our dedication to a greener future. We will continue to plant trees as we employ more seafarers,” Captain Channa said.
Mrs Rajan highlighted the critical role that partnerships play in achieving large-scale environmental goals. “The Rotary One Million Trees Project is a testament to what can be accomplished when communities and corporations come together.”
The project, officially titled “Planting of Saplings by Global Marine Services in Partnership with Rotary One Million Trees Project,” was conducted at Somerset Estate, Talawakelle Tea Estates Limited. This location, managed by Hayleys TTEL, was selected for its ecological significance and potential for reforestation. D M G Bandara Dassanayake, Deputy General Manager (Agro Forestry & Projects) at Hayleys TTEL, represented the estate management and reaffirmed the estate’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
Gayana Godamulle, Yasasmi Wickramarathna, Shemara Fonseka, Chamod Fernando & Sashini Senarath, Anuka Alwis and Anjana Weerasinghe joined the event.
