Award winning teledrama director and renowned filmmaker Sudath Rohana will release screen plays of four of his teledramas titled ‘Vikumsaha Kathandara’ (Wickremesinghe’s stories) made based on the short stories of the pioneer Sri Lankan writer Martin Wickremesinghe.

The television screenplays of four teledramas tiled ‘Mudiyanse Mama’, ‘Sisiliyata Padamak’, ‘Upasaka Amma’ and ‘Mawa’ will be released at 3 pm on September 25 at the Auditorium of the Department of National Archives Colombo 7.

Originally telecast 30 years ago, the special features of these books are inclusion of the respective short story, critical analysis of the screenplay written based on the short story and how the work of literature was converted to the audio-visual medium.

‘Publishing three decades after the release of original teledramas the publication will bridge the original dramas using the new technology’ Sudath Rohana said,

The readers will be able to quickly watch the original teledrama by scanning the QR code that is printed in each book.

‘This will be an interesting experience for those who are studying the subject of teledrama and screenplay writing specially based on literature. I made these teledramas 30 years ago using the basic technology. But it is sad that despite the availability of the advanced technology there are no attempts to recreate the rich literature to the audio-visual medium’ Sudath explained.

According to the award winning teledrama director the four books will help anyone trying to make
teledrama or films based on any
literary piece whether it may be
a short story or novel.

‘This will defiantly inspire a generation of teledrama directors or filmmakers to make their works based on the rich literature’ Sudath said.

Asked as to why he doesn’t try to make more teledramas of the nature, Sudath said it is a major challenge to recreate teledramas or films based on period stories as the production cost is extremely high.

‘Unfortunately with so much advanced technology the present day teledrama makers don’t attempt this,” he said adding “profit making has become the prime objective of present day teledrama industry’.

Created by Martin Wickremesinghe Trust Board,
the books are published
by ‘Sarasa’ Publications.
