Election official in drunk driving crash: Female election official and father injured

An election officer and her father were injured in a collision involving their motorcycle and a car driven by a senior official attached to a counting centre in the Puttalam district.
The accident occurred when the female official identified as Sureni Madusika and her father, A.H.M. Dayaratne, were on their way for election duty at a puttalam counting centre. They suffered serious injuries and were receiving treatment at the Puttalam General Hospital, police said.
The officer who drove the car was a senior Deputy Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department, and he was found to be under the influence of liquor after being produced for a medical examination, police said.
Puttalam District returning officer (District Secretary) H.M.S.P. Herath said he appointed another official to the vacant post of the senior officer to carry out the duties at the counting centre.
