Layton Cup to serve as ASBC Asian Elite selection tournament
The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) announced that the Layton Cup Boxing Tournament 2024 will double as a key selection event for the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championship. Organised by the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC), this prestigious championship is set to take place from November 28 to December 12 in Jordan. Sri Lanka will be fielding a team to compete against the best boxers across Asia.
To determine the athletes who will represent Sri Lanka on this elite stage, a selection tournament will be held from October 1 to 3 at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo, followed by the semi-finals and finals at Browns Beach in Negombo on October 4 and 5. This marks the first time the Layton Cup will be held in Negombo, adding a new level of excitement to this year’s competition.
According to BASL President Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, the boxers who excel during this tournament will be recommended for the national squad, ensuring the strongest possible team represents Sri Lanka at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championship.
“I encourage all clubs to participate actively and prepare their athletes for this important selection event. This tournament is a crucial opportunity for boxers to showcase their talent and secure a spot in the national squad,” said Bandara.
The Layton Cup will adhere to International Boxing Association (IBA) rules, and participation is restricted to boxers who have achieved specific rankings in previous national tournaments. The winners, first and second runners-up will be awarded medals, with additional honours for the best boxer in both men’s and women’s categories.
