Government to continue teacher recruitment
View(s):The new Government will expedite the recruitment of 16,000 teachers to State schools so that the shortage of teachers across the country can be alleviated by next year, a senior Education Ministry official said.
The recruitment will prioritise the appointment of teachers for Ordinary Level and Advanced Level classes, especially for the maths and science streams, they said. Teachers for all other subjects too will be appointed in the coming months.
The official said they hope to recruit around 15,000 teachers from among those who have been given appointments as development officers in the government sector, and make the rest of the appointments from State university graduates.
“There was a case filed in court by the development officers over teacher appointments that has been sorted out now. We have sought the opinion of the Attorney General (AG) before we recruit some of them as teachers,” he added.
Currently there are around 32,000 teacher vacancies island-wide and it is hoped that within the next year these vacancies can be filled and that teachers can be transferred to all areas including to schools in remote areas.
The programme to recruit more teachers was begun by the previous government and will be continued under the new government.
