Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara said no decision has been made to reschedule the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship exam.

A committee has been appointed to investigate the matter, and the Department of Examinations conducted a preliminary probe, submitting a report on the officials involved in the paper leak to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), he said.

The Education Ministry noted that the CID aims to conclude the investigation soon.

Mr Jayasundara said the Ministry has urgently requested an independent report addressing the issues raised in the scholarship question paper.

Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya has instructed swift action to prevent any undue pressure or injustice on the children, prioritising their best interests.

During a discussion with MoE officials, Dr Amarasuriya directed the formation of an independent committee, consisting of local and international experts, to review the examination evaluation methods and provide recommendations promptly.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has called for a report from the Department of Examinations regarding the leaked question paper from the Grade 5 Scholarship examinations. The Commission has directed a report be submitted before next Friday.

The Commission initiated inquiries following complaints lodged by parents of students and called for a meeting with senior officials from the Education Ministry and the Department of Examinations.

According to the complaints lodged to the Commission, the parents of the students pointed out that the incident violated the rights of the children and the impact it will have on children who are forced to re-take the examination.

Meanwhile, Commissioner General Jayasundara added that the department is making every effort to ensure 2023 GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) exam results are available soon.

He confirmed that the 2024 Advanced Level (A/L) Examination is scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 20.

Furthermore, he emphasised the department’s goal of restoring the national exam schedules to their regular timeline by 2026.
