Teachers union asks govt to address existing salary discrepancies
View(s):Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin called on the current Government to address existing salary discrepancies and various other teacher-related concerns as part of its efforts to stabilise the country, particularly with the upcoming general and local elections in mind.
Mr Stalin highlighted the immense pressure faced by government employees, many of whom supported the National People’s Power (NPP) through postal votes and active participation. He emphasised that the government must prioritise their concerns, noting that protests are already occurring and that the current administration came to power with the backing of these voters.
He stressed the urgency of resolving salary anomalies for teachers and principals, warning that failure to do so would leave them with no choice but to take action.
Meanwhile, in a discussion with officials from the Education Ministry on Thursday, Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya underscored the importance of transparency in filling teacher vacancies, urging that the process be conducted properly to foster public trust. (NA)
