More than 100 institutions under each Cabinet minister

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the two other members of his Cabinet have been allocated more than 100 government institutions each, according to the subjects and functions gazette issued yesterday.

In addition to the Ministry of Defence, the President also holds the finance portfolio. He also has the subjects of Economic Development, Policy Formulation, Planning and Tourism, Energy, Agriculture, Land, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries, and Aquatic Resources Ministries under his purview.

When all these add up, there are 124 government institutions coming under him.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya also holds several important portfolios, including Justice, Public Administration, Provincial Councils, Local Government and Labour, Education, Science and Technology, Women, Child and Youth Affairs and Sports, Trade, Commercial, Food Security, Co-operative Development, Industries and Entrepreneur Development, and Health. There are 127 separate institutions coming under her.

Vijitha Herath, who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs, also holds multiple portfolios. His other portfolios include Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, National Integration, Social Security and Mass Media, Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Public Security, Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation and Community, Infrastructure and Rural and Urban Development, Housing, and Construction.

In all, he has 142 institutions coming under him. The interim cabinet has been appointed by the President till the election of new members to the next Parliament, following which a 25-member Cabinet is to be appointed.
