New appointments for SJB and SJS

Former MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar was appointed Chairman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) by party leader Sajith Premadasa this week.

Mr Bakeer Markar pioneered the United National Party (UNP) Student Movement in 1970 and became president of the Inter-University UNP Student Power Board in 1974.

From 1975 to 1980, he functioned as the national president of the UNP Student Movement. He became a member of the UNP General Assembly in 1981.

He has 54 years of political experience, serving also as the General Secretary of the Lanka Youth Front and a Member of the Kalutara District Anniversary Assembly. Mr Bakeer Markar served as an MP from 1988 to 2004. He was appointed to Parliament from the SJB’s National List after the 2020 parliamentary election.

Meanwhile, former MP Kabir Hashim was appointed as the General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Sandanaya (SJS). Mr Hashim is a former MP from the Kegalle District and was a former Minister of Highways, Higher Education and Investment Promotion. He was also a former General Secretary of the UNP.

Former Gampaha District SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna was appointed as the SJB’s Gampaha District Chairman.
