Retired High Court Judge Champa Janaki Rajaratne assumed duties as the new governor of Sabaragamuwa Province on Thursday (27). Addressing those present, Ms Rajaratne said her aim is to eradicate corruption and wastage, and work with the support of everyone, irrespective of party differences, to resolve people’s issues. She recalled that she had a connection to the province as she had served in three different court houses there as a judge. As such, Ms Rajaratne said she has an understanding of the hopes of the people of the province and the issues they face.

Meanwhile, former senior administrative service officer Bandula Harishchandra assumed duties at a ceremony held at the Southern Province governor’s office. An old boy of Sri Palee College, Horana, he has a postgraduate degree from the University of Kelaniya. His first appointment had been as the Assistant Election Commissioner for the Ampara District. Taking office as Central Province governor, former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University, Prof Sarath Abeykoon said that only a small percentage of students enter State universities. However, even those who have never seen a university also give their hard earned money for their education. He noted it is up to university graduates to serve the people who pay for them to get a higher education.

The governor said it is the right of everyone to protect the Constitution and the laws that it enshrines. Corruption and wastage should be eliminated, he added.
