Malwatte Chapter Maha Nayaka the most venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera yesterday told Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya that the new Government must take steps to reopen closed factories and take measures to strength the country’s economy first.

Ms Amarasuriya who assumed duties as the country’s Prime Minister last Wednesday visited the Dalada Maligawa and called on the Maha Nayaka Theras of the Asgiriya and Malwatte chapters.

“You have to be committed. The first thing that should be done is to strengthen the country’s economy. When poverty increases, crime increases. Closed factories should be reopened,” the Maha Nayaka Thera said.

He said there should be no classification of schools with some categorised as the best schools in Sri Lanka. The method of enrolling children into government schools should also be changed,” the Thera said.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya said that she had met with principals of the national schools after assuming duties. “They told me that many children didn’t continue their education after the Ordinary Level examinations. There is a drop in school attendance. There is a 75 % drop in children from upper classes attending State run schools. There should be no classification of best schools and bad schools. All children should have the same good things,” she said.

She added that as of now, the three in the Cabinet including the President have about five ministries each and the first six weeks will be a bit difficult for them. “After the election we hope to form a strong government. We have great support from government officials. They have suggested many ways in which to stop fraud and corruption. They are now able to work without fear. It is a great strength for us,” the Prime Minister said.

She added that they would need the guidance of the clergy in the future as they progress with changing the systems in place.
