The Education Ministry has instructed schools to set up a series of programmes for students in view of National reading month 2024.

Issuing a circular on Monday, the Ministry provided guidelines and instructions to all schools to have programmes to promote reading. The programmes will be held in parallel to national reading month (October).

The programmes are to create an interest in reading books, however it is up to school principals to implement the programmes in a manner which suits the school. The Ministry has told principals not to collect money from students or parents for the programmes. Principals are instructed to utilise school facilities within the school or facilities provided to schools.

The ministry has instructed principals and school administration to identify the requirements of students and provide facilities to make students engage in reading activities.

Accordingly, improving library facilities and increasing the number of books could be carried out. The schools could organise book fairs, and annual school donation day.

The ministry has also instructed to have activities to encourage students to engage in reading activities such as awareness programmes, debates, and discussions.

Schools are instructed to exhibit banners to create interest among students.

Schools are instructed to promote reading by conducting reading camps, reading societies and library associations. The best book readers of 2024 could also be identified and be evaluated.

Schools were instructed to set up programmes for Library Day and Library Week. Principals are instructed to organise programmes for library week from October 21-25. The programme should be conducted from classroom level, with a student leader for each class. (KW)
