Focus, dedication and self-studies help students ace O/L exam
View(s):Nearly two thirds of the students who sat the GCE (O/L) Examination have qualified to enter Advanced Level classes, showing an improvement in the pass rate compared to the previous year.
According to the Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasudara a total of 415,540 students sat the examination, though 452,979 applied to sit the examination, and 73.55 per cent qualified to enter A/L classes.
The number of students who obtained ‘A’ passes in all 9 subjects are 13,309, while 2.12 per cent failed the exam.
As statistics of the exam were released, there were many cases of joy and jubilation, particularly among students who obtained all A passes.
There were students who were content with their results, while others who failed would have another opportunity to sit the exam and show better results.
Among the students who were celebrating were Hirushi Malsha from Sangamitta College, Galle, who was placed number one according to her results.
“I was focused on my studies and planned my work. I believe that was the key to my success,’ Malsha told journalists after receiving the results. She had followed the English stream.
Her twin sister who studied along with her too had obtained nine As.
Malsha said she woke up every day at 5.30 am for her studies, and planned her studies and did not stress herself. She was also involved in extracurricular activities.
Her father, T H Punsiri Kumaratunga, is employed at the Udugama Depot while her mother M K G Kumari is a teacher attached to Piyatissa Vidyalaya, Kalegana, Galle.
Vimansha Jayanidi of Maliyadewa Balika, Kurunegala, was one of those who was placed second island wide said that it was her dedication that brought her the results.
She expressed her gratitude to parents, teachers, relations and friends. Vimansha too has a twin sister who passed all subjects at the examination.
Their father is a retired public sector employee, and mother is employed at the Divisional Secretary’s office in Wariyapola.
Kuluni Methsara of Musaeus College Colombo, who was also placed second in the country based on her results, said she never expected such good results, though she expected to pass well based on her efforts.
She said she had not taken tuition classes and was involved in lots of self-studies and engaged in extracurricular activities.
