New steps to minimise exam paper leaks
View(s):In the wake of a string of incidents where question papers have been leaked, the Examinations Department is planning to introduce an automated system to prepare question papers.
Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara told Education Times the system will be used for the first time at the next GCE (Advanced Level) Examination.
The automated system will select from some 5,000 to 6,000 questions and final supervision will be done by a select few persons involved in making questions.
Accordingly, 4-5 questions papers will be made, and one will be selected for the exam.
After the new system is introduced, the manual system where questions are selected will end, thus minimising the requirement to use a large number of staff.
This is one among a string of precautionary steps to be taken to prevent questions leaking in advance, similar to that of the last Grade 5 scholarship exam.
Special arrangements will also be put in place for the printing of question papers.
The department also hopes to introduce a monitoring team to be deployed when the question paper packets are opened at the commencement of the exam. They will ensure that no mobile phones or other devices will be in place around the area.
The CID and the cybercrime unit will keep a close watch for questions being shared in advance. They will monitor tuition classes in the respective areas.
Meanwhile, a full investigation is underway into the alleged leak of questions from the Grade 5 scholarship exam.
The report will be ready in two weeks on the directive of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. (DWI)
