‘The First Teacher Opera’ (‘Guru Geethaya’) a unique collaboration, blending Russian and Sinhala elements, will be staged at the Elphinstone Theatre in Colombo at 7.00 pm on Friday, October 11, 2024.

Sumudu Pathiraja

The opera, inspired by the novel ‘The First Teacher’ by Chingiz Aitmatov, boasts a libretto by Sumudu Pathiraja and a score composed by Pruthivi Wijesiri. Felix Fernando translated the libretto from Sinhala to Russian, while Rohan Ranathunga translated it from Sinhala to English. The choreography for The First Teacher Opera is masterfully crafted by the award-winning veteran artiste, Nilan Maligaspe.

‘The First Teacher Opera’ premiere on October 11 will inaugurate an era of International Opera. This will be the very first instant that Russian opera produced by a group of Sri Lankans, performed by Sri Lankans to inspire and empower the audience.  Featuring the most beautiful Russian voices outside of Russia, ‘The First Teacher Opera’ open the world of Russian Operatic music for those who want to experience it outside Russian Theatre.

‘First Teacher Opera’, brought to Sri Lankan audience in partnership with the Russian House Colombo.

The opera spins around Duishen, the amazing teacher in Chingiz Aitmatov’s novel The First Teacher, captivates us with his profound dedication to
educating children in a remote village, inspiring hope and change through knowledge and compassion. His character embodies resilience and wisdom, shaping young minds amidst challenging circumstances.

The First Teacher Opera is a unique collaboration, blending Russian and Sinhala elements, aimed at empowering young practitioners of opera and engaging audiences of all ages. The production will feature a diverse cast, including young talents aged 8-18, seasoned practitioners 19 and above, and professional opera singers. Mr. Anatoly Rodov’s unwavering support as the Russian articulation coach has greatly bolstered the confidence of our singers, many of whom are singing in Russian for the first time. His clear guidance, given day and night, ensured mistakes were carefully observed and corrected promptly, without delay.

Pruthivi Wijesiri and his Orchestra

The legendary voices blend the young talented composer Pruthivi Wijesiri are Maneesha Wijesingha, Nihari Wickramarachchi, Indika Upamali, Sumudu Pathiraja, Niluka Thisari, and Subuddhi Lakmali. These iconic performers will share the stage with the exceptionally talented young stars of tomorrow: Dinith Abhishek, Chanaka Tissera, Shenon Kavinda and Sanithi Dias.

The cast includes Chanaka Tissera (Bass)-Karathanbayi, Shenon Kavinda- Sathimkul/Soldier/The guitarist, Susanga Kahandawaarachchi- Uncle, Randika Wimalasuriya- Brute, M. Tharik (Tenor)- Rich man and Kingsley Lowe-The Principal.
