Attempt to swindle baker backfires
An individual suspected of attempting to extort money from a bakery manufacturer while posing as a senior officer of the Inland Revenue Department’s (IRD) Kandy branch was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
The suspect initially contacted the bakery owner by phone, placing a food order for a function at the IRD’s Kandy branch. Subsequently, he informed the owner that the food was no longer required and requested that a deposit be made in given bank account number.
The concerned bakery owner had then asked his chief accountant to verify whether such an event was occurring at the Kandy IRD office. Upon discovering that no function was scheduled, the bakery owner reported the matter to the IRD’s Kandy branch. The Deputy Commissioner Ajith Sisira Kumara had asked him to file a complaint with the Kandy CID, which resulted in the suspect’s arrest. The 57-year-old suspect, a resident of Kobbakaduwa, Kandy, had previously served as a police constable but had faced disciplinary action. He is also facing a court action as part of ongoing investigations into potential connections with similar fraudulent activities.
