EC has no objection to providing subsidies to farmers and fishermen and pensioners’ arrears
View(s):On Friday, the Election Commission (EC) responded to claims it had moved to “suspend” issuing of certain programmes such as the fertiliser subsidy for farmers until the conclusion of the 2024 parliamentary election.
Issuing a statement, the Commission noted that it had suspended certain proposed programmes / projects and initiatives to provide benefits to the people during the period of the last presidential election as these had been designed to promote political parties / candidates. With the presidential election now over, it is no longer necessary to obtain the EC’s permission to implement them, the commission clarified.
The statement added that the EC had no objection to re-implementing initiatives such as providing fertiliser for the 2024/2025 Maha season, subsidies for fishermen, the increased allowance for pensioners including arrears from September to be paid in October, as well as all activities temporarily suspended during the period of the presidential election to ensure the smooth functioning of the country’s general administration and efficient government services.
EC Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake told the Sunday Times that for example, the EC had no objection to the release of Rs. 15, 000 this month to the bank accounts of farmers as a fertiliser subsidy for the Maha season, which would be followed by the Rs. 10, 000 increase in the subsidy next month after the conclusion of the parliamentary election.
