During the upcoming general elections, all new appointments, promotions, and transfers of government employees will require prior approval from the Election Commission.

Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said the measure is to prevent the misuse of state-owned property, including those of state corporations and statutory bodies, in order to ensure a fair and transparent election process.

Mr. Ratnayake said, keeping in line with the commission’s regulations, a letter was sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports Authority following a complaint regarding the appointment of a new Managing Director. In the letter, the Commission requested a report on the matter to be submitted within three days, emphasising that the general election process had already begun.

He said that any individuals holding political appointments made by the previous government have an ethical responsibility to step down from their positions during the election period. However, he clarified that those in permanent positions are under no obligation to resign, as they have the right to remain in their roles.

However, he said projects and programmes stalled during the presidential election can be implemented, and the EC’s permission is not required to start the projects.
