Narratives that grip the imagination

In this latest collection of short stories, Sasanka Nanayakkara once again proves himself as a master storyteller, drawing from the wellspring of his personal adventures and encounters.

In our younger years, Sasanka was among a cadre of nature enthusiasts, traversing the island whenever time allowed. I can still vividly recall those evenings around the campfire deep in the jungle, Sasanka’s voice weaving tales that held us spellbound. His travels served as the crucible for myriad impressions and experiences, seamlessly integrated into the fabric of his narratives.

Take “The C-90” for instance, a tale spun from a real-life expedition in search of the beautiful dry zone forest hideaway chronicled in the 1950s by D.J. Hennessy in “Green Aisles.” Venturing through forest byways and remote hamlets, we found ourselves on the banks of the Malwathu Oya, seeking respite from the sweltering sun. What transpired next, recounted in Sasanka’s story, led us on a heart-pounding escape from imminent danger, to eventually arrive at our destination—an anti-climactic modest farmer’s dwelling.

Despite the lack of the much anticipated mystique of the place, we encountered a link to the past in the form of a descendant from the village described by Hennessy.

Sasanka’s narratives are rich tapestries woven with threads of diverse cultures, locales, and characters, ensuring an unyielding grip on the reader’s imagination. Whether whimsical or profound, each story within this volume promises an immersive and captivating experience for the reader.
