‘Te Deum’: A challenging programme well executed by Colombo Philharmonic
View(s):Being a fortunate recipient of an enjoyable ‘Te Deum’ presented by the Colombo Philharmonic Choir at the Church of St Michael and All Angels on September 25 – this review is a sincere ‘Thank you’ to the choristers for a well-rehearsed performance and Harin Amirthanathan for his excellent conducting of the evening’s challenging programme.
The mixed audience thoroughly enjoyed the fine art of musicology which Harin and the Executive Committee of the Colombo Philharmonic Choir are undoubtedly well endowed with. The Colombo Philharmonic Choir, since its inception in 1955, is to be commended for their untiring efforts in their long musical journey.
The evening was a superlative performance of the works of John Rutter’s Crown of Glory, Missa Brevis and Te Deum, all three compositions premiering in Sri Lanka, much earlier 16th century works of William Byrd – Sing Joyfully, Thomas Tallis – If ye love me, Christopher Tye – Praise ye the Lord, ye children, and later 20th century works of William Mathias – Let the people praise thee, O God, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford – Beati quorum via, Henry Balfour Gardiner – Evening Hymn, Sir Hubert Parry – I was Glad and Denham Pereira’s organ solo, Elegy by Sir George Thalben-Ball.
The entire programme was executed with precision and expertise.
