Aaron spins S. Thomas’ to victory; Royal succumb at Moratuwa

Left-arm leg spinner Aaron de Silva delivered an impressive performance, taking 6 for 27 to lead S. Thomas’ College to an outright win by 33 runs over St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota in a low-scoring Under-19 Inter-School cricket encounter concluded in Mt. Lavinia yesterday.

On the second day, S. Thomas’ resumed their second innings from an overnight score of 27 for 1 but quickly fell into trouble, losing four wickets to slump to 46 for 5.

However, they managed to recover and finished their innings at 126 runs. This set St. Anthony’s a target of 97 runs, but they faced similar challenges, losing their top five wickets for just 55 runs. The left and right-arm spin duo of Aaron de Silva and Anshen de Silva then cleaned up the tail, bundling St. Anthony’s out for 63 runs.

At Moratuwa, St. Sebastian’s College secured victory over Royal College by an innings and eight runs. Sitting comfortably on day one, the hosts resumed from their overnight score of 243 for 2, and went on to pile up 369 for 9 before declaring. Ryan Dissanayake contributed significantly with a knock of 106, supported by half centuries from Ushen Silva and Kaveesha Perera.

Looking to erase the deficit of 147 runs to avoid an innings defeat, Royal faltered, and were bundled out for 139 runs. Malintha Silva, with a match haul of eight wickets, along with Koshendra Fernando and Ryan Dissanayake spearheaded the commanding win for St. Sebastian’s.

In other matches, Prince of Wales College recorded a comfortable 9-wicket win over Sri Sumangala College, Panadura. Sri Devananda MV Ambalangoda triumphed over Piliyandala Central by 9 wickets, while Christ King College Ja-ela defeated Maris Stella College, Thimbirigaskatuwa by 32 runs.
