Nazeem Ghaffoor’s name is etched into the rich history of Zahira College rugby. His remarkable journey, which began as a young boy watching the Zahira vs. Kingswood match in Bogambara in 1987, has grown into a story of passion, leadership, and excellence. From captaining his team to becoming a revered coach, Ghaffoor has been a central figure in Zahira’s rugby success for decades.

In 1990, Nazeem Ghaffoor was entrusted with the captaincy of the Zahira 1st XV rugby team, a role in which he thrived. The following year, 1991, was marked by an exceptional performance where Ghaffoor led the team to an unbeaten streak until the very last game of the season. His leadership on the field was a defining factor in the team’s success, showcasing his determination, skill, and ability to rally his teammates.

After his successful playing career, Ghaffoor transitioned into coaching in 1992, taking the reins as head coach of Zahira. Over the next 16 years, his coaching transformed the college’s rugby programme into one of the most respected in the country. Zahira won multiple championships under his guidance, with six players from his teams going on to represent the national team—a testament to his talent for nurturing future rugby stars.

His achievements as a coach also extended beyond the college. In 1995, Ghaffoor took charge of Old Zahira Sports Club, where he guided the team to Division ‘A’ status and led them to victories in both domestic and international competitions.

Ghaffoor’s legacy at Zahira is defined not just by victories and titles, but by the lasting influence he has had on the school’s rugby culture. His passion for the game, commitment to his players, and exceptional coaching acumen have shaped generations of Zahira rugby players, leaving an indelible mark on the institution. Today, Zahira’s rugby programme continues to build on the foundation Ghaffoor established, with his influence evident in the discipline, spirit, and sportsmanship displayed by the players.

While contributing to his school Ghaffoor built a reputation by contributing his vast rugby knowledge to assist other units as a Citing Officer, a role he presently continues to perform at the highest level as an official Citing Officer of Sri Lanka Rugby.

As Zahira College looks to the future, Ghaffoor’s contributions will continue to serve as a source of inspiration. His journey from a young fan in Bogambara to becoming a rugby legend reflects the power of dedication and passion. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of rugby players and coaches at Zahira College and beyond.
