The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, ranked as India’s top university in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings with a score between 53.7 and 55.7, supports its students through a comprehensive scholarship programme alongside its commitment to academic excellence.

THE rankings evaluate research-intensive universities based on five core criteria: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income.

Alongside its performance in the THE rankings, IISc Bangalore also excelled in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2025, securing the second spot in overall university rankings.

It ranks third in the QS World Rankings 2025 among Indian institutions.

To support these aspirations, IISc Bangalore offers a variety of scholarship schemes for its students. According to the institute’s official website, all students enrolled are eligible for scholarships and fellowships from

various funding agencies, including CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR, MHRD, AICTE, DAE (NBHM), and DST, depending on their mode of entry.

However, this eligibility does not extend to those enrolling in MSc, MMgt, BTech, or MTech programmes through the CFTI mode, nor to those in the Joint MTech in Semiconductor Technology and 1-Year MEngineering programmes.

MTech, MDes, and MTech (Research) students are eligible for scholarships for a maximum of two years, while PhD candidates can benefit from fellowships for up to five years.

Importantly, students enrolled in MTech and MDes programmes are required to commit to completing their courses. Those who leave prematurely must refund the entire scholarship amount received.

Students who receive salaries from their employers or are sponsored are not eligible for these scholarships or fellowships.

MSc and MMgt students, along with those enrolled in certain BTech and MTech programmes, are not eligible for institute-funded scholarships. However, they are encouraged to apply for external funding opportunities.

These financial support mechanisms demonstrate IISc Bangalore’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, and ensuring that deserving students can pursue their educational goals without financial obstacles.
