World Tourism Day 2024 Celebrations at Management and Science Institute (Msi)
View(s):In honour of World Tourism Day 2024, the Management and Science Institute (MSI) hosted a grand celebration on September 28th, aimed at highlighting the “Tourism and Peace” and also importance of tourism and its related fields. The event was organised by the students of the Hospitality, Tourism, and Event Management programmes under the coordination of Mr. Ali Idroos, Lecturer in charge of the programmes.
Management and Science Institute (MSI) is the offshore campus of Management and Science University (MSU) Malaysia, a Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), global multi-ranked institution focused on building holistic human capital. World Tourism Day 2024 Celebration sarranged under the directions of Professor Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, the President of Management and Science University (MSU) and Management and Science Institute (MSI)and with the directions of Vice Chancellor of MSU.
The celebration began with a formal opening by Mr. D.S. Peiris, Director of MSI, who emphasised the crucial role of tourism in today’s global economy and its impact on sustainable development. He stressed how important such events are in providing students with hands-on experience, essential to their academic and professional growth in the fields of hospitality, tourism, and event management.
A key feature of the day was the panel discussion that delved into the future of tourism and event management. Moderated by Ms. K.W.M.R.Nikita Mapitigama(Outreach Coordinator/ Career Guidance Counsellor& MSI Alumni) and the panel included notable industry professionals such as Mr. Ruwan Rathnayake (Director of BeyondEscapes PVT LTD / MSU PhD Scholar), Mr. Suranga Tennakoon (CEO/Managing Director – Sustainable Leadership Managing (PVT) Ltd.), and Ms. Paddy Paul (Managing Director – Golden Isle Travel). The session provided valuable insights into emerging trends, the role of innovation in tourism, and the importance of sustainable practices.
The event was further enlivened by vibrant performances and entertainment segments prepared by the students of Hospitality, Tourism, and Event Management, showcasing their creativity and organisational skills.
MSI had also extended an invitation to Shri Devananda School at Galboda, at Matara offering its students the opportunity to gain knowledge about the tourism industry and interact with MSI students. As a token of goodwill, library books were donated by Mr. Ali Idroos,the Lecturer & Programme Manager for School of Hospitality & Event Management with the students’ representatives of the ‘December to Remember’Event at MSI to the Shri Devananda School students, symbolizing the importance of sharing knowledge and fostering community ties.
The World Tourism Day celebration at MSI not only highlighted the significance of the tourism industry but also served as a platform for students to showcase their talents, gain practical experience, and connect with industry experts, contributing to their professional development.
