Fifty bar licences issued during the presidential election period have been put on hold and will be reviewed before they are re-issued or cancelled, a senior official said.
He said that around 50 licences had been issued to various people through political connections in the lead up to the elections.
Several recipients of the bar licences have made a request not to cancel them but the government would examine them before taking a decision, the official said.
He said new guidelines would be issued for those seeking to obtain bar licences. If there are public objections to the opening of bars, they would be taken into consideration when an application is under perusal, he said.
The opinions of residents as well as places of religious worship, and schools would also be taken into consideration before new bar licences are issued.
“We will give priority to tourist zones as they are essential for those engaged in the sector. We will also do a study of the existing bars so that they are phased out in a proper manner,” he said.
