Former BASL Secretary running for its Presidency
View(s):Dr Sunil Abeyaratne, former BASL Secretary, is contesting for the BASL Presidency.
Dr Abeyaratne, an attorney-at-law with 38 years of experience as an active practitioner in the legal profession, will contest for the post of President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) for 2025-2026.
He was elected secretary to the BASL (2006-2008). He served as Zonal Vice President, ExCo member, BASL Newsletter Editor (2000-2002), and BASL Law Journal Assistant Editor (1997-2006). During the past 36 years as a member of the Bar Council, he was Chairman of the Committees on Continuing Legal Education, National Law Conference, and IT Law Committee.
Dr Abeyaratne earned the first PhD in IT Law from the University of Colombo. He holds an LLM from Queen Mary College, University of London, an MBA from Indira Gandhi National Open University, and a Diploma in Forensic Medicine Science and Toxicology from the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo.
Dr Abeyaratne has had a career practicing civil, criminal, commercial, and public law in appellate and first-instance courts.
During his tenure as the Secretary of BASL, he was instrumental in launching ‘Law Week,’ a National project; setting up the IT Law committee of the BASL; and conducting an island wide series of educational projects to educate the members on IT Law as a new subject.
He authored the first book on ICT Law in Sri Lanka, Introduction to ICT Law as well as the Lawyers Handbook on ICT Law. He has written over 100 articles for national and international law journals and presented more than 100 research papers nationally and internationally.
Dr Abeyaratne is a PhD and MPhil supervisor and a visiting lecturer in ICT Law, Commercial Arbitration, Construction Law, and Criminal Law for the Master and Bachelor’s degree programmes of Faculty of Law Colombo, Department of Law, Peradeniya, Kothalawala Defense University, Sri Lanka Law College, APIIT Law school, NIBM, Green University, Faculty of Medicine Colombo, ICBT, Sri Lanka Police Academy, and Arbitration centre of Kandy. He was instrumental in introducing ICT Law as a subject to the curriculum of these institutions. He was appointed as an international researcher at Yunnan University, Kunming (2015), to develop the Asian legal system.
