The government will appoint three high-level committees before the general election to look into large-scale financial crimes, address the issues of reconciliation, and take a fresh look at the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

This is in keeping with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s election pledges to prioritise ethical governance, including addressing issues of mismanagement and corruption, a senior government source said. He reiterated that accountability issues would be  addressed through a domestic mechanism. “We have a competent team that can address issues of accountability and reconciliation. We are aware of the grievances of a large number of people affected, and we will ensure justice for them. A trustworthy truth and reconciliation process too will be put in place,” the source said.

Already investigating authorities have redoubled their efforts into a number of clearly identified accountability cases that were pending.

The committee that will look into corruption and stolen state assets will recommend measures to recover the lost public finances. “We will act promptly in this regard,” he said.

The Easter attacks committee will be tasked with taking a fresh look at the massacres. “We have a special team that has been selected for this purpose,” he said, adding that justice would be served to the victims.
