In a defining moment for Sri Lankan badminton, 17-year-old Ranithma Liyanage marked her name in the sport’s history by reaching the Round of 16 in the Under-19 Women’s Singles category at the BWF World Junior Badminton Championship, at the Nanchang International Sports Centre in Jiangxi, China. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time a Sri Lankan shuttler has advanced this far in the tournament.

Liyanage’s journey commenced with a challenging match against India’s Venala Kolagotla. After a tough start, she rallied to secure 2-1 victory with scores of 16-21, 21-12, and 21-15. This win set the tone for her campaign, exhibiting her ability to adapt and persevere. Following this, she faced American Veronica Young, winning convincingly in straight sets with set scores of 21-14 and 21-16. These triumphs propelled her into the Round of 32, where she encountered Vietnam’s Bu Bich Phuong.

In this crucial clash, Liyanage started strong, clinching the first set 21-13. However, Phuong regrouped and came back aggressively, winning the second set 21-12. The third set became a test of mental strength, with Phuong initially taking a lead of 11-4. Yet, Liyanage displayed admirable strength, adjusting her strategy to wear down her opponent and eventually triumphing with a score of 21-16, to record a 2-1 win.

“I’m very happy, as this is my first time in the Round of 16,” said Liyanage after her win against the Vietnamese.

The atmosphere in the tournament was electrifying, particularly as Liyanage prepared to face the third-seeded Xu Wen Jing of China for a coveted spot in the quarter-finals. Despite her commendable efforts, she ultimately fell to Xu by 22-20 and 21-13, yet her journey thus far has been a guiding light.

Hailing from Christ Church College in Baddegama, a town approximately 125 kilometres from Colombo, Liyanage finds motivation in South Korean badminton star An Se Young. Her dedication and ferocious competitive spirit reflect the influence of her idol. With an indomitable work ethic, she has developed her skills, and her performances have borne fruit on this level of the game.

Currently ranked 120th in the Senior World category, Liyanage has experienced a balanced year, showing off an equal record of wins and losses—15 victories and 15 defeats across 30 matches. This year alone, she has competed in 14 Women’s Singles matches, securing seven wins while suffering seven defeats. Despite the challenges, her resolve remains firm.

Liyanage’s participation in the World Junior Badminton Championship not only highlights her personal milestones but also marks a crucial juncture for Sri Lanka’s badminton. As she reflects on her experiences, Liyanage expresses her ambition to continue improving and climbing the rankings.

“My dream is to become champion at the World Juniors,” she asserted, pointing out her aspirations and love for the sport.

Ranithma Liyanage’s journey in Nanchang may have concluded with a loss against Xu Wen Jing, but her legacy as a forerunner for Sri Lankan badminton has just begun.
