Sri Lanka finish fifth in CAVA U-20s
Sri Lanka defeated the Maldives 3-0 to claim the fifth place in the six-nation CAVA Under-20 Men’s Volleyball Championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and concluded yesterday at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
The Sri Lankan team dominated all three sets, winning 25-12, 25-20, and 25-20 in the match for fifth and sixth place. The tournament, which lasted seven days, featured a round-robin stage where each of the six teams played five matches.
Sri Lanka faced challenges during the round-robin stage, finishing with one victory and four losses. Their only win came against the Maldives (3-0) on the second day. However, they lost to Nepal (1-2) and then faced three straight defeats against Kyrgyzstan (2-3), Turkmenistan (1-3), and Uzbekistan (1-3), which led them to compete for fifth and sixth place against the Maldives.
In the playoff for third place, Turkmenistan edged out Kyrgyzstan in a thrilling five-set match, winning 3-2 with scores of 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, and 15-13.
In the championship final, Uzbekistan claimed the title defeating Nepal 3-1. The final scores were 25-27, 25-10, 25-16, and 25-20, crowning Uzbekistan as the champions of the 2024 CAVA Under-20 Men’s Volleyball Championship.
