JAGAAS honoured for strengthening ties between Japan and Sri Lanka

The Japanese Graduates’ Alumni Association of Sri Lanka (JAGAAS) was honoured in recognition of the association’s contributions to strengthening the ties between Japan and Sri Lanka, particularly in education, culture, and professional exchange.

The commendation by the Japanese Foreign Minister was conferred during a reception held at the official residence of Ambassador Mizukohsi Hideaki.

President of JAGAAS Dr Sunil Nawarathne accepted the award on behalf of the association, which has been promoting bilateral relations since its founding in 1993. Composed of alumni who have pursued higher education in Japan, JAGAAS functions as a think tank of expertise in various fields, including science, arts, and management.

The ambassador praised JAGAAS’s efforts, extending his congratulations on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and the people of Japan.

He highlighted the association’s contributions in fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

Some of JAGAAS’s notable initiatives include; a Japanese Education Seminar held in partnership with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), the Bon Odori Festival to mark one of the most cherished cultural celebrations, Commemorative Publications to mark anniversaries of Sri Lanka-Japan diplomatic relations, seminars and workshops, specialised skilled worker (SSW) programmes , initiating the creation of a Japanese language programme, and establishing the JAGAAS Award to recognise outstanding Japanese nationals/organisations and Lankan alumni members for their contribution to Sri Lanka’s development.
