INS Kalpeni calls in Colombo
View(s):The Indian Navy ship INS Kalpeni arrived in Colombo yesterday and was accorded a welcome by the Sri Lanka Navy.
The ship’s Commander Sunil Kulhari called on Western Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe on arrival.
INS Kalpeni, a Car Nicobar class Waterjet FAC of the Indian Navy, was commissioned on October 14, 2010. The ship is named after Kalpeni Island in the Lakshadweep group of islands, the Indian High Commission said.
The ship is based in Kochi and is primarily involved in coastal surveillance and defence. The ship specialises in anti-smuggling,
vessel boarding search & seizure, as well as search & rescue operations.
The ship is on a port call from October 19–21, termed Operational Turn Around. The ship has brought essential technical support tools, which will be handed over to the Sri Lanka Navy.
INS Kabra, a similar class of ship, visited Colombo in January this year and handed over spares to the Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force.
