Politicians who crossed over to other parties after handing over nominations for the local government elections will be exposed as the elections are to be held on the previous nomination list, Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said.

He said that in keeping with the court order, the elections will be held on the nominations that have already been handed over.

Mr. Ratnayake addressing journalists at a workshop organised by Internews in Kandy, said that according to the election laws a party general secretary had the powers to take a decision to expel or not the candidates crossed over to another party after being elected.

During the previous government there was a proposal to cancel the nominations for the local government elections and call for fresh nominations but it was not implemented.
