Ratnapura hospital’s kidney transplant success

The first kidney transplant surgery carried out at the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital was a success, Hospital Director Dr Dammika Alahapperuma said.
Dr Alahapperuma explained that though they had been improving the facilities required to carry out kidney transplant surgery in the hospital during the past few years, meanwhile the Ratnapura Lions association had built a section of the intensive care unit which had facilities.
The first patient to undergo kidney transplant surgery was Ven Niladure Chandrasiri Thera (69) residing at Kahawatta Bomalu Viharaya. The kidney was donated by K W Siripala (57) who was identified as a resident of Kahawatta, Ellegewatta as well as a relative of the venerable thera.
Dr Alahapperuma said that the hospital has all the required facilities to perform kidney transplant surgery.
“This surgery was done due to the efforts and dedication of the consultant physicians Dr Lakshman Weerasekara, Chanaka Arachchige, Gayan Bandara, anesthesiologists Anura Fernando and Lakshmi Ranasinghe,” he said.
According to Dr Alahapperuma the surgery took five hours to be successfully completed. He added that five nurses of the Ratnapura hospital had a two-week training at Kandy General Hospital’s kidney surgery unit before the first kidney transplant surgery was carried out at the hospital.
