Fairly heavy showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva and Northern provinces during the weekend, the Meteorology Department predicts.

Several spells of light showers may occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Meteorologist Malith Perera said showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Eastern province during evenings or nights.

People have been asked to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

Meanwhile fishing and naval communities are requested to be vigilant of localised winds.

The wind speed can increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in coastal areas. The area extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanturai can get very rough at times. However, the Irrigation Department has withdrawn all flood warnings issued for the Kelani Ganga and Attanagalu Oya.

The director of the department S.P.C. Sugeeshwara said the flood warnings had been issued on October 11, due to the heavy rains. The department is constantly monitoring rainfall conditions across the island and the water levels of major rivers, and all arrangements have been made for possible flooding, he said.

The Disaster Management Centre has reported that nearly 39,000 people belonging to 10,008 families faced hardships because of the heavy winds and rainfall experienced in eight provinces– the Western, Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North Central, Central, Northwestern and Eastern provinces.

Two deaths were reported, one from Kaduwela in Colombo and Millaniya in the Kalutara district.

According to the reports 4622 people are in 38 safety locations.
