A bomb scare that forced an Indian passenger flight to make an emergency landing at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday turned out to be a hoax after a thorough security search, officials said.
The Vistara Airlines flight carrying 96 passengers and eight crew members was heading from Mumbai to Colombo. It made an emergency landing 10 minutes before the scheduled time of 3 p.m.
The airline said its office in India had received the warning that a bomb had been planted on the plane, an A320 Airbus, and accordingly the flight made the emergency landing.
As the flight was making the landing, the bomb disposal unit, commandos, medical staff, ambulances, and the fire brigade units were put on standby. The flight was moved to a secluded area, and a thorough search was carried out after the passengers were evacuated to safety.
A BIA spokesman said they could not find any suspicious objects after the search that lasted more than an hour while the passengers and the crew too were checked.
The official said the airline receiveda similar hoax call yesterday while one of its flights was on its way to London, and it had been forced to land in Frankfurt, Germany. Further investigations are underway.
