Sri Lanka has slipped into the least-liked countries for digital nomads from being the best paradise for digital nomads, three years ago.

In January 2022, the hotel website, Club Med listed Sri Lanka as the second-best country for digital nomads to visit. At the time, over 50,000 digital nomads occupied the island. Club Med listed Colombo as the fourth in the best places in the world to be a digital nomad with a total index score of 238 out of 320. The 30 million digital nomad population in 2022 has now risen more than double to 80 million.

According to nomads.com, Sri Lanka is on the fifth place in the ‘Least liked countries’.

The Wi-Fi, 5G, fuel, and public transport along with a separate Visa category with one year stay and extendable up to two years with an allowance to open a bank account were some of the reasons that Sri Lanka has got into the least liked list, an industry analyst told the Sunday Times Business on Thursday. He noted the importance of the government recognising digital nomad visas as a way of allowing remote workers to live and work in Sri Lanka.

Now, digital nomads and foreign nationals who want to operate remotely in Sri Lanka can apply for a 30-day Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), instead of an official digital nomad visa. There is no minimum monthly income requirement yet. However, analysts point out that as remote work becomes increasingly mainstream, many countries are recognising the benefits of attracting digital nomads, such as boosting local economies and diversifying their talent pools. “Work-friendly accommodation, high-speed Internet packages, resident visa benefits such as discounted rates in visiting locations and centrally paid public transport system via a mobile app/wallet are some of the most critical factors that countries have that attract many digital nomads,” the analyst pointed out.

The most liked countries for digital nomads are Japan, Croatia, Bosnia, Chechnya, Greece, Poland, Estonia, South Korea, Switzerland, Singapore, Costa Rica, Hungary, Netherlands, and Spain.
