Marking Universal Children’s Day on October 1st, Citizens Development Business Finance PLC (CDB), continued its mission of empowering students with technological skills by adding two more Smart Computer Labs to the districts of Galle and Matara.  This brings the total of Smart Computer Labs to 19 across 19 districts, all of which benefit a total of 7000 + students across the country.

Underscoring the theme for Universal Children’s Day 2024 – Protect and treat every child equally – CDB’s quest is for equal tech accessibility for every child, equipping them with competencies, tools and skills to thrive in a digital world.

Says Deputy CEO of CDB Damith Tennakoon: “Launching the two labs in Galle and Matara on Universal Children’s Day further underlines CDB’s commitment to enhancing digital literacy and continuing to invest in the future of Sri Lanka. With this year’s theme reiterating the need to protect and treat every child equally, by providing digital knowledge, we expand mindsets, present survival tools and open career opportunities with employable knowledge so that the youth of Sri Lanka become enabled and empowered.  It is this knowledge, skill and tools that they will use to take this country forward.”

The Smart Computer Lab initiative which is the flagship project of CDB’s socially conscious pillar in its sustainability agenda, fulfils a crucial need to build a ‘smart generation’ with greater speed.  CDB began the initiative in 2008 to address the digital divide in Sri Lanka’s rural and economically disadvantaged areas where children have no access to modern technology and digital learning tools.

The Smart Computer Labs are placed in districts that have been identified as those having limited availability of digital resources in schools which naturally hinders young children having equal access to knowledge that form the bedrock to opitimising future career prospects.  By bridging the gap and promoting educational equality, CDB brings to the fore its sustainability strategy of empowering Sri Lankan youth via technology-driven learning, fostering a more inclusive digital future.
