Govt. hopeful of travel advisory withdrawals: Foreign Minister
View(s):The government is engaging with foreign diplomatic missions to remove their travel advisories linked to information about an alleged plan to attack Israeli tourists and is hopeful that these advisories will be removed within the next two weeks, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told the Sunday Times.
Extensive measures had been taken to ensure the security of foreign tourists since the government received intelligence early this month about a plan to attack Israeli tourists, Minister Herath said.
However, the information was not made public, he said, adding that the government held discussions with the foreign missions to brief them on the security steps that had been taken.
Agencies such as the State Intelligence Service and the Criminal Investigation Department were also engaged, and all precautions were taken to ensure the security of Israelis and other tourists, the minister said.
He said President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had been personally engaged in the matter and had held discussions with foreign envoys. “The President reviewed the progress of the security measures that have been taken,” he said, adding that Sri Lanka had assured countries such as the United States, Israel, Australia, Canada, and Britain of the safety of their citizens.
He said the country was preparing for the upcoming tourist season and that tourists should have no fears about their security while in the country.
