Sri Lanka’s application to join the BRICS as a full member did not happen in view of the group’s decision at Kazan to maintain the membership at nine for the present, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath told the Sunday Times.

However, he said Sri Lanka’s request to join the grouping as a ‘Partner` membership country will be considered.

Mr. Herath said that Sri Lanka is also to join the BRICS’ New Development Bank, which provides financial assistance to Member countries.

Accordingly, the Cabinet will soon approve a proposal to join the New Development Bank.

BRICS is a powerful grouping of the world’s leading emerging market economies. The BRICS member states are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Brazil will take over the chair of BRICS next year.

Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane represented Sri Lanka at the BRICS Plus Outreach Dialogue held in Kazan, Russia, on Thursday. The Outreach Dialogue followed the conclusion of the BRICS Summit held from October 22 to 24.

The 16th BRICS Summit and the Outreach Dialogue were chaired by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and attended by 35 leaders (or their representatives), as well as the United Nations Secretary-General.

The summit concluded with the adoption of the Kazan Declaration. The Summit also welcomed the considerable interest by countries of the Global South in BRICS and believed that the gradual extension of BRICS ‘partnership’ status was beneficial.
