The important topic of anti-microbial Resistance (AMR), which is causing concern worldwide, was the focus of a special issue of the Ceylon Medical Journal (CMJ).

Volume 69, 2024 of the CMJ published in September was dedicated to AMR as it has been identified as an important threat to human  health, while also having serious adverse effects in the fields of animal husbandry and fisheries.

“In 2016, at a United Nations high-level meeting, the member states pledged to take action to deal with the emerging issue of AMR. Although progress has been made, AMR continues to significantly  impact health. It is estimated that nearly 5 million deaths in 2019  were attributed to AMR,” states the editorial note by CMJ co-editors Prof Athula Sumathipala and Prof Senaka Rajapakse and guest editors Prof A Pathmeswaran and Prof Ajith Nagahawatte.

The special issue prepared in partnership with the World Health  Organization (WHO) Sri Lanka Country Office seeks to raise awareness regarding the growing threat of AMR and share best practices in dealing with AMR among researchers and practitioners within Sri Lanka, in the region and globally. The special issue has been tabled at the UN General Office through the WHO Country Office.
