New feature in elephant fence from University of Vavuniya
View(s):The University of Vavuniya has developed a new structure for elephant fences to prevent elephants from moving into certain areas such as gardens and paddy fields.
“The fence was actually made last year but we added a new feature to the invention by having a hanging element to the fence,” Senior Lecturer of Vavuniya University in the Department of Bio Science, Dr Wijeyamohan said.
Dr Wijeyamohan said the invention is now hanging 6 feet high and only prevents the movement of elephants and not humans or other animals.
The senior lecturer designed the fence but the proprietor of the fence would be the University of Vavuniya.
He also remarked that the students stand to benefit by knowing how it is built and how they function. Students also get the opportunity to be creative in reducing the human elephant problem.
Dr Wijeyamohan said the project was a World Bank financed project with a 1.2 million investment and that per kilometer the cost was Rs 700,000. The project was an AHEAD project of the World Bank in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education.
He highlighted that it was first implemented in Mullaitivu but was abandoned because the people did not properly maintain it.
Dr Wijeyamohan also elaborated that they had no plans regarding distribution and that it was the Department of Wildlife which had to implement it and see through its success in the larger context.
He explained that the electricity used was 6,000 volts and was the acceptable level of electricity worldwide and the elephant would only get a shock and it would not impact the elephant in its normal movements.
