Deeply devoted to animals, Tashiya Captain founded ‘Justice For Animals’ in 2019. The non-profit charity focuses on proactive, humane, long-term animal welfare, including spay/neuter programmes.
Starting off, Tashiya campaigned for the Animal Welfare Bill to be passed.
In April 2020, at the height of COVID-19 lockdowns, the organisation was asked by the head monk of the Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya to help the dogs who were starving, and needed urgent medical attention.
In 2021, they focused on Anuradhapura City in collaboration with the Municipal Council through their flagship programme, the “Rabies Control via Humane Population”, conducting a 14-day spay/ neuter clinics and animal welfare programmes for low-income communities. “‘Spay-neuter-vaccinate-treat’ is not just an animal welfare programme, it is a programme that benefits communities,” says Tashiya.
Most recently, over 300 children took part in an art competition Let’s Love Animals” that they conducted along with Vets for Future and the Anuradhapura Municipal Council for World Rabies Day in September.
They are now selling raffle tickets at Rs. 500 to help spay/neuter more animals. If you’re an animal lover, you can volunteer with Justice for Animals at fundraiser events or donate dry rations or second-hand items for their fundraiser market, Aluth Pola.
