16 diplomats to be recalled
View(s):The Presidential Secretariat has decided to terminate the appointments of 16 Consuls General and diplomatic officers with immediate effect.
Accordingly, Presidential Secretary N.S. Kumanayake has sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a list of names of those to be recalled.
He said the decision to recall them was taken on the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
The officers to be recalled include three Consuls General, one Deputy High Commissioner, six third-secretaries, two ministers, and two minister counsellors.
Minister Herath said replacements would be made soon after the new government was elected.
He said a decision was also taken earlier to recall 16 ambassadors.
They have been told to conclude their assignments by December.
He said replacements would be made from the foreign service and those selected from other professions according to the requirements in the respective regions.
He said ambassadors or high commissioners would be given special tasks such as exploring employment opportunities, attracting investments to Sri Lanka, and looking at new markets for Sri Lanka.
The countries where the envoys will be required to conclude their assignments by December are Britain, India, Australia, Japan, Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, the UAE, Qatar, the Seychelles, Malaysia, Kenya, the Maldives, Indonesia, and Cuba, in addition to the United Nations in New York.
Mahinda Samarasinghe, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, has been asked to remain in his post.
