CIABOC to issue warrants on politicians and officials dodging statements

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) is to issue summons on politicians and officials who have avoided appearing before the Commission to provide statements over ongoing investigations.
The summons will be issued under powers vested with the CIABOC.
The commission will take steps to notify courts regarding those who fail to answer such summons and obtain a fresh summons on them through courts, a senior official said. The commission hopes to obtain warrants for the arrest of those who fail to even respond to summons issued through the court.
The Sunday Times learns that the commission has decided to take this step as many of those who had complaints lodged against them have not provided enough assistance to investigators probing these complaints. This has resulted in the CIABOC being unable to complete investigations into many complaints of corruption and irregularities. This in turn has resulted in delays in filing cases.
Meanwhile, the CIABOC has also found that cases are yet to be filed regarding a large number of complaints where investigations have been completed. The commission has now instructed the relevant officers to immediately file cases regarding these completed investigations.
Investigations have revealed that some politicians and officials who acquire assets illegally have been acquiring them under the names of their close associates. The commission has accordingly initiated investigations to take action against such associates as well.
