Teaching foreigners how to cook Lankan food
View(s):A Sri Lankan has ventured into a campaign to promote local food items among foreigners by encouraging them to learn to cook traditional meals.
The owner of an eatery at Unawatuna, Wasantha Hewage, has started promoting tourism by promoting local meals to foreigners.
She had started her local food promotion at her eatery and now had started to provide cooking classes for the foreigners so that they themselves could prepare Sri Lankan meals.
Ms. Hewage told the Sunday Times that both male and female foreigners are given the opportunity to learn to cook Sri Lankan meals.
“At the moment, tourism has become one of the main foreign exchange sources. People rent houses or rent vehicles for foreigners. Therefore, I thought of a different move. I thought of getting foreigners used to eating local meals,” she said.
She added that her husband too approved her idea and started to serve local meals to foreigners at our eatery. The foreign tourists too were interested in our vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, papadam, and brinjal moju.
According to her, they started the local food cooking class for foreigners, and after some time they started serving local food to foreigners. The class was also attended by many foreign tourists.
She added that when she visits Italy to see her daughter, she also teaches Italians how to prepare
Sri Lankan meals.
