  • A platform for Original English Songs on Radio Sri Lanka

For many years, Sri Lankan Western musicians who have composed original English songs have faced a significant challenge—there has been no dedicated radio platform to play their work. As a result, many talented artistes have been discouraged from continuing to compose originals, focusing instead on covering popular songs from international artistes at all functions, concerts and performances. Most local radio stations have primarily played foreign English songs, leaving little room for homegrown talent to shine.

Despite these challenges, some dedicated Sri Lankan artistes have continued to compose original English music, contributing to the growth of Western music culture in the country. Artistes such as Manella Joseph, Mariazelle Gunathilaka, Thrishula Abeysekara, Lankika Perera, Lucky Deva, Sohan Weerasinghe, Priya Peiris, and many more have kept the flame alive with their original compositions.

Now, there is an exciting news for both musicians and listeners alike. Radio Sri Lanka, on 97.4FM and 97.6FM, under the guidance of presenter Chagee Dabare, is ready to dedicate a platform to Sri Lankan original English songs. From Monday to Friday, between 8.00 am and 12.00 noon, listeners can tune in to hear Homegrown English songs.

Additionally, a special ‘request show’ airs from Monday to Saturday, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm., allowing listeners to request their favourite local original English songs. On Sundays, the request show extends from 2.00pm. to 6.00p.m.

‘This marks a turning point for our Western musicians and bands, offering them a fantastic opportunity to showcase their original work. It’s also great news for fans of Sri Lankan music, who can now enjoy and support local talent by tuning in and making requests’ said Lucky Deva, who is keen and worked hard in promoting homegrown English songs.

The presenter Chagee Dabare said Sri Lanka’s airwaves are ready to boost and promote good-quality, original English songs in any style to play during her music segments.

‘The time has come for our talented musicians to compose more original English songs. Let’s support our musicians and promote our unique musical identity’ she added.
