Renowned children’s plays goes on board

Two children’s plays ‘Punchi Apata Dan Therei’ (We Know It Now) and ‘Thoppi Velenda’ (The Hat Seller) produced by the late Somalatha Subasinghe will be staged in Colombo and Negombo.
The two plays which are prescribed text for Grade 5, 6, 7 Sinhala language and Grade 9 ‘theatre and drama’ syllabus will be staged at 8.15 am and 10.30 am at Western Province Aesthetic institute in Colombo on November 20 and at the same times on November 21 at Rukmani Devi Memorial theatre in Negombo.
‘Punchi Apata Den Therei’ and ‘Toppi Velenda’ are based on famous international Falk tales. They are semi musicals produced with the objective to inspire children’s sense of basic art forms and develop a pride in Sri Lankan culture as well as to promote the importance of the institution of family and its values. In the adaptations, new characters and situations have been incorporated particularly to facilitate an intellectual and entertaining discourse with the Sri Lankan child.
‘Punchi Apata Dan Therei’ and ‘Thoppi Velenda’ have participated in International Children’s Theatre Festivals in France, South Korea, Bangladesh, India, Australia and the Netherlands.
