Premier meets new ICC Senior Officials
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya recently met with key figures from the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), including Sumathi Dharmawardena, President’s Counsel, the newly appointed Independent Chair of the ICC ACU, and Alex Marshall,General Manager of Integrity and Human Resources, ICC.
While congratulating Dharmawardena on his new appointment with the ICC, the Premier also inquired Sri Lanka’s progress in preventing corruption related to sports. During the discussion, Alex Marshall noted Sri Lanka’s progress in combating corruption in cricket over the past seven years, emphasising the importance of player education and strengthening the Ministry of Sports’ Special Investigations.
He also made a special mention about Dharmawardena’s involvement and contribution in making progressive changes to laws of preventing corruption activities in sports. Dharmawardena, further elaborating, explained that Sri Lanka has made reformed changes covering all sports, in accordance to the country’s law.
The meeting was also attended by Andrew Ephgrave, Senior Manager, of ICC ACU Operations; J.M. Wijebandara, Senior Attorney and Director General of Legal at the President’s Office; Mrs. Illeperuma, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Sports; and Prof. Shemal Fernando, Director General of Sports.
