Lankan gastroenterologist Dr K Iswara presented award
View(s):The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) honoured Lankan gastroenterologist Dr K Iswara, MD, FACG, FACP, AGAF, and Detective Roxanne Joseph of the New York Police Department (NYPD) with the SCOPY Award (Service Award for Colorectal Cancer Outreach Prevention and Year-Round Excellence) at the ACG’s annual scientific meeting held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center last week. This award celebrates outstanding achievements in colorectal cancer education and outreach by medical professionals and practices across the United States.
Dr Iswara, an honorary NYPD surgeon, and Detective Joseph collaborated on an impactful colorectal cancer awareness campaign aimed at increasing the visibility of cancer screening’s importance within the NYPD community, including families of African and Caribbean heritage. The two launched a public forum where Detective Joseph shared her personal experience of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 40 under Dr Iswara’s care.
The award marks the first time a Lankan has received the SCOPY honour. In addition to the SCOPY recognition, Dr Iswara and Detective Joseph received a special citation from the New York City Council and NYPD leadership for their commitment to public health.
Dr Iswara’s dedication to community health outreach has set a new standard within the gastroenterology field, underscoring the critical role of awareness and early screening in colorectal cancer prevention. The ACG introduced the SCOPY awards in 2015 to honor impactful colorectal cancer outreach and prevention initiatives.
