Sabaragamuwa Uni students face housing, medical challenges
View(s):Students at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) are grappling with accommodation shortages and limited medical facilities, creating challenges for their academic and personal well-being.
Krishnaka Neranjan, President of the Main Student Union at SUSL, highlighted a shortage of hostel accommodations, noting that while the university serves approximately 9,000 students, only 4,500 have access to on-campus housing.
This leaves half of the student body without proper accommodation, a situation that has forced students from seven faculties to rely on online lectures as a temporary solution.
Samith Viduranga, former President of the Faculty of Geomatics Students’ Union, argued that online learning is ineffective for many courses requiring hands-on. He explained that the approach is also ineffective for courses with practical components that require in-person attendance.
Students also have inadequate medical resources. Viduranga raised concerns about the limited medical services on campus, which lack essential facilities and a functioning ambulance for emergencies. These shortcomings add further stress to students already dealing with housing issues.
Neranjan also highlighted the broader implications of the university’s rural setting. With few part-time job opportunities available in the area, many students struggle to support themselves. Finding alternative accommodation is equally challenging due to limited housing options with only around 467 boarding spots available locally.
Although the Prime Minister has pledged to address these concerns, students say that no concrete solutions have been provided yet. They are calling for immediate action to construct a well-equipped hostel complex and improve existing resources, urging the university and the government to ensure better living and learning conditions for all students.
